Microsoft has confirmed that it will eliminate approximately 4,800 positions worldwide as part of a broader restructuring effort aimed at streamlining operations and supporting its long-term artificial intelligence strategy. The layoffs represent about 2.1% of the company's global workforce and come as Microsoft continues to invest billions of dollars in AI technologies and cloud infrastructure.

A significant portion of the workforce reductions will occur within Microsoft's gaming business. Around 3,200 of the affected positions are in the Xbox division, with approximately 1,600 employees leaving immediately. As part of the restructuring, Microsoft plans to make several gaming studios independent while reviewing the future of other studios.

Microsoft said the decision is intended to simplify its organizational structure and position the company for future growth. The company emphasized that the job cuts are part of a broader business reorganization while it continues expanding AI investments.

The restructuring comes as Microsoft continues expanding its AI capabilities across products and services, including enterprise AI, cloud computing, and business productivity tools.

"Whether the agreements signed today translate into meaningful change remains an open question."
